helloStranger uses Bluetooth range to determine who is physically nearby. When another helloStranger user is within Bluetooth range of you, you can see their public profile and connect with them.
Detecting who is nearby uses Bluetooth and works without an internet connection. However, an internet connection is required to create your account, send messages, and receive push notifications.
helloStranger uses Bluetooth signal range to detect who is physically nearby — no GPS or internet required for this. You must grant Bluetooth permission for the app to determine who is within range of you.
No. helloStranger does not share your GPS location with other users. Nearby detection is based on Bluetooth signal range only, so other users know you are nearby but not your exact location.
You can set your visibility to Active or Hidden from your profile settings. When Hidden, your profile will not appear to other nearby users. You can switch between modes at any time.
Open the user's profile and tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner. You can block the user to prevent them from seeing your profile, or report them if their behaviour violates our community guidelines.
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your device and that helloStranger has Bluetooth permission in your device settings. Also ensure the other user has the app open and is set to Active. The other person must be within Bluetooth range — typically up to around 10 metres. Try closing and reopening the app if it still isn't working.
